Honda has revealed three new ‘VTEC TURBO’ engines, which will join its expanding ‘Earth Dreams Technology’ range.
The new engine line-up comprises a 1.0-litre three cylinder, a 1.5-litre four cylinder and a range-topping 2.0-litre four cylinder.
All benefit from direct fuel injection, Honda’s VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) system and turbocharging to deliver ‘dynamic performance, as well as class-leading output and fuel economy’.
Honda says that the engines are based on an entirely new architecture and, in the case of the 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre engines, feature very low friction levels which aids efficiency.
In the new Honda Civic Type R the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine is reputed to produce ‘at least’ 300bhp and 295lb ft. This allows the Type R to accelerate from 0-62mph in around 5.8sec and reach a top speed of approximately 160mph.
The new powerplants, together with Honda’s new 1.6-litre diesel engine and hybrid technology, will make their way into a number of future global models.
Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology is a new series of engines that are designed to deliver a blend of high performance and efficiency. It’s claimed that the new technology used in the engines will allow Honda to deliver the best average fuel consumption within three years.
